Posted on June 14, 2008 - Filed Under Writing and Speaking

A novice who wants to make a mark in the field of literature needn’t comply with the established standards of writing and at the same time he or she needn’t be heterodox. Some guideposts can avail to bring the best out of what you want to say.

The main idea behind writing a novel happens at a whim. You suddenly impinge on a story line and you want to let the world know.

So when such a thought strikes and if you are sure your idea is authentic you can embark on writing a novel. A novel actually is a drawn-out fictional work in prose. First categorize under which genre your idea can be placed. The various genre of novel are fiction, biography, autobiography, fantasy or a whodunit. Usually a novel starts with the acknowledgements and then the prologue, which serves as an introduction to the rest of the story.

No sooner you have got a trenchant thought about the entire plot line than you can start to pen down. What are important are the characters that you insinuate in each chapter. In many of the novels there will be a protagonist, whose description is imperative. As and when you introduce a new character you should be cautious that the character is not a weak link to your entire story and ultimately make the plot feeble. It is mandatory that every character in disguise is divulged at least in the end of the novel. The story can be told by the author himself or by any other character in the plot. Both direct and indirect speeches can be used depending on the context.

It is important to ward off garrulous and banal conversations. Also avoid prolixity, because it might rile your readers. A crucial point is, there are some limitations about the maximum number of words to be used in a novel. A good novelist should be a passionate reader and should be heedful of the consequences that he has to face when the novel is released. An originative style of writing will be widely accepted by the readers. If your novel should hover on and not efface from your readers mind then it of import that you translate your entire feelings or idea into meaningful sentences which can in turn frame good chapters and a better novel on the whole.

The story if written on paper should be typed into a word document, which is a powerful tool for any writer. To quote Chetan Bhagat “It is only when one writes a book that one realizes the true power of MSWord, from grammar checks to replace-calls. Thank you Mr. Bill Gates and Microsoft Corp”. Last but not the least, pleasure should be found while writing a novel and not just at the end of it.
