Business presenters typically prepare for presentations by crunching numbers and preparing PowerPoint slides and graphics. They prepare a line of logic and lay it out in PowerPoint. Once that line is clear and clean, the presenter begins to feel comfortable and confident about the presentation. It can be a big surprise when a well-planned presentation falls flat on its face.
Jay Conger, an expert on communication techniques of senior business leaders, says this:
“If you are like most business people…, you see persuasion as a relatively straightforward process. First, you strongly state your position. Second, you outline the supporting arguments, followed by a highly assertive, data-based exposition. Finally, you enter the deal-making stage and work toward a ‘close.’”

I sat through a presentation where the speaker handed the audience a copy of his notes (his talk written out in full), projected those same notes onto a screen behind him, and then read word-for-word from his notes, and sometimes from the screen, which amounted to the same thing. The overall effect was deadly.
The thing to remember about visual aids is that they must be visual and they must aid. Too many people, when called upon to make a presentation or speech, think they must project their words onto a screen behind them as row after row of bulleted points. The result is death by bullets.

One of the most successful English pop singers of all times, Robbie Williams, has told how the sight of a terrified celebrity footballer David Beckham helped him to come to terms with nerves before his Live 8 performance in the summer of 2005. The 31-year-old pop star was nervous about his first live performance in the UK for two years. But he lost his nerves when he saw Beckham fretting about introducing him on stage at London’s Hyde Park. “David looked more scared and I got a perverse joy out of it.” he said on BBC One’s Friday Night with Jonathan Ross.
